American Medical Response (AMR), America’s leading provider of medical transportation services, recently celebrated a major milestone in Yakima County – 60 years of service to the community.
The operation, located in Yakima, first opened its doors in February 1961, operating as Yakima Ambulance. In 1973, the company introduced paramedics to its workforce and became Yakima Ambulance Medic One. By 1984, original owner Larry Pryor was ready to pass on the family business to his son, Larry J. Pryor. In October 1994, was purchased by Shepard Ambulance-Carline, which ultimately became American Medical Response Yakima.
The operation has changed names over the years, but the ideals have always remained the same – providing care to the world at a moment’s notice.
“For 60 years now we have proudly served as the locally focused healthcare provider for the community,” said Paul Priest, Regional Director for Global Medical Response. “Our dedicated teams have served Yakima County through the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980, the floods of 1995, numerous winter storms and even a global pandemic. I am sure that when Larry Pryor founded Yakima ambulance back in ’61, he couldn’t have dreamed of level of care and service that this organization has been able to provide to the community – and for 60 years.”
Rich Austin, Director of Sports Development for the Yakima Valley Sports Commission applauded AMR’s dedication and service to Yakima County. “The Yakima Valley Sports Commission, a division of Yakima Valley Tourism, has worked exclusively with AMR at dozens of sporting events for almost 15 years. AMR’s professionalism, knowledge, dedication and service are second to none.”
Today AMR Yakima employs 86 full-time and part-time caregivers from Yakima and Kittitas Counties. In addition to providing high-quality 911 service, AMR caregivers give their time, talents and resources at special community events throughout the year including the Hot Shots 3 on 3, the Central Washington State Fair and drag race nights at Renegade Raceway. AMR Yakima also offers an annual scholarship program for area EMTs.
