AMR Brings Its Nationally Recognized Paid EMT Training Program to Abilene
10.9.2024
Our 'Earn While You Learn' initiative supports workforce development and community health.
MetroCare/American Medical Response (AMR) is thrilled to announce the launch of its nationally recognized “Earn While You Learn” program in Abilene, providing a transformative opportunity for residents interested in pursuing a career in emergency medical services. This innovative program offers paid, full-time employment while participants complete the training required to become certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) – all at no cost to the trainee. With applications open through October 21, up to 20 new EMT trainees will be hired and trained to serve the Abilene community. This groundbreaking initiative removes financial barriers, offering a clear path to a rewarding career while supporting individuals with a steady income as they train.
In addition to classroom learning, participants will gain hands-on experience in an apprenticeship-style role, working alongside seasoned first responders to support and observe real emergency situations. This immersive, internship-like training allows trainees to learn on the job while developing critical skills in a real-world setting.
“The beauty of this program is that it eliminates both the time and financial barriers that often prevent people from pursuing careers in EMS,” said Janet Schuessler, Operations Manager for MetroCare/AMR. “For many who are already part of the workforce, the idea of adding schooling on top of a full-time job can feel overwhelming. With 'Earn While You Learn,' participants receive free, on-the-job training in an internship-style environment while earning a full-time income, making this opportunity truly accessible.”
Meeting a Growing Need in EMS
The demand for skilled EMTs has never been greater. The EMS industry is facing a critical shortage of paramedics and EMTs, while the need for emergency medical services continues to rise due to a growing and aging population. In response to this challenge, AMR launched the “Earn While You Learn” program in 2018 to recruit and train a diverse population of new EMTs. By eliminating the financial hurdles typically associated with EMS certification, this program has become a vital tool in workforce development and has earned national recognition from the American Ambulance Association for its innovative approach to recruitment.
“This program has been incredibly successful in recruiting individuals who are passionate about making a difference in their communities,” said Schuessler. “We’ve seen an especially strong response from women and people of color, which aligns with our deep commitment to diversity and inclusion.”
A Proven Success Across the Nation
Since its inception, the “Earn While You Learn” program has expanded to Washington, Arizona, Nevada, Indiana, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Ohio, and Tennessee, graduating more than 2,000 EMS professionals nationwide. Its success underscores AMR’s commitment to growing a workforce that reflects the diverse communities it serves.
