Global Medical Response (GMR), the world’s leading provider of medical transportation, is celebrating EMS Week by highlighting the work of two very special New Haven EMTs. In honor of the week-long celebration, GMR, along with NTT INDYCAR and Indianapolis Motor Speedway, invited American Medical Response (AMR) EMTs Bill Freeman and Melissa Blyth to participate in special race day events during the GMR Grand Prix this past weekend.

Freeman and Blyth were invited to participate in an interview alongside Global Medical Response COO Ted Van Horne at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) on Saturday. The interview segment about the important work of first responders nationwide during the COVID-19 pandemic was broadcast to 135,000 race fans at IMS. In addition to the interview, Blyth and Freeman received exclusive pre-race rides around the 2.5-mile track and were invited to have their picture taken with GMR Grand Prix race winner Rinus VeeKay in the winner’s circle.

“The GMR Grand Prix was an amazing opportunity that I was honored to be a part of,” said Melissa Blyth, EMT for AMR. “Meeting leaders from GMR and the other honorees was an absolute pleasure, and the friendship I made are invaluable.”

“This was a once in a lifetime experience,” said Bill Freeman, EMT for AMR. “It was an honor to be selected for this opportunity.”

The New Haven EMTs were invited to participate in the special race events as a thank you for their heroic efforts in aiding a patient experiencing a psychiatric emergency earlier this year.

“Recently Bill and Melissa came upon a patient in extreme psychiatric distress on the ledge of a bridge,” said William Schietinger, Regional Director for AMR parent company Global Medical Response. “They stopped to render aid and were able to keep the patient calm until the fire department arrived to assist.”
