Global Medical Response Mobilizes Emergency Medical Teams in Preparation for Hurricane Helene

GMR deployed ground and air ambulance units, medical personnel to support communities in the storm’s path.
As Hurricane Helene approaches the Gulf Coast, Global Medical Response (GMR), the leading provider of emergency medical services, has mobilized its disaster response teams to assist communities across the Southeastern U.S. expected to be impacted by the storm. GMR’s comprehensive deployment includes ground and air ambulance units, highly trained medical personnel, and advanced life-support resources to ensure the safety and well-being of residents in the hurricane’s projected path.

This mobilization is in response to the federal government's request to American Medical Response (AMR) for emergency medical services (EMS) aid as part of its contract with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), as well as the State of Florida and impacted health systems.

GMR President and CEO Nick Loporcaro emphasized the organization’s readiness, stating "As Hurricane Helene rapidly intensifies, our teams are working around the clock to deploy resources and personnel to support first responders and local healthcare systems. Our top priority is to ensure that residents have access to life-saving medical care during and after the storm. Whether it’s evacuating critical patients, providing emergency medical treatment, or transporting individuals to safety, we are prepared to respond immediately."

In coordination with FEMA, state and local governments, GMR’s disaster response teams will offer a range of critical services, including:
  • Emergency medical care and transport for storm victims
  • Air evacuation for high-risk individuals and hospital patients, including fragile neonatal patients
  • Ground ambulance transport for those in need of urgent medical services
  • On-site medical support at shelters for displaced residents
  • Coordination with local hospitals and healthcare facilities to manage patient surges
  • Evacuation of patients from hospitals or skilled nursing facilities
“As part of our commitment to disaster preparedness, GMR has stationed response teams in strategic locations ahead of the storm’s arrival to ensure rapid mobilization when needed, said Ted Van Horne, chief operating officer for Global Medical Response. “We are closely monitoring weather conditions and are in regular contact with local emergency management agencies to provide timely support.”

With decades of experience in disaster response, GMR’s teams are equipped to handle the unique challenges presented by hurricanes. Over the past year, GMR has responded to numerous natural disasters, providing essential medical services and ensuring the safety of tens of thousands of people across the U.S.
