Med-Trans Corporation Announces In-Network Agreement With Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama

BCBS members in Alabama will not receive balance bills when transported by Med-Trans
Med-Trans Corporation officials today announced they have signed a new agreement with Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) of Alabama. This agreement, which was effective as of January 1, 2021, provides BCBS Alabama members with in-network access to Med-Trans’ life-saving emergency air medical transports. Med-Trans operates several helicopter air ambulances that provide rapid transport and expert clinical care for patients in Alabama, including: Medstar Air Care in Baldwin County and Escambia County; Life Force locations in Winchester and Cleveland, Tenn., and Calhoun, Ga.; ShandsCair locations in Milton and Southport, Fla.; and Air Rescue locations in Gulfport, Miss.
Medstar Air Care Manager Chad Jones said the new agreement means that BCBS Alabama members flown for a life- or limb-threatening medical emergency by a Med-Trans operated air ambulance will only be responsible for their benefit plan deductible and co-insurance.
“This is welcome news for BCBS insured members in Alabama,” Jones added. “Our crews provide outstanding and compassionate pre-hospital care to Alabama residents, and it is comforting to know BCBS members are now covered for this life-saving service.”

Griffin, CEO for Escambia County Healthcare Authority, said he is pleased with the in-network agreement. “Medstar Air Care, Med-Trans and BlueCross Blue Shield of Alabama officials are to be commended for their efforts in working together to put their mutual customer first when it comes to emergency air medical transports,” he said.
Alabama State Senator Chris Elliott said, “For years, Baldwin County has been a safer place due to the presence of Medstar Air Care assets that quickly transport patients to receive urgent care. Through the efforts of both Medstar and Blue Cross Blue Shield, I’m very pleased to learn that this crucial service will now be in network for both our residents and our many visitors who are BCBS insureds.”
