New Hire to Lead Members of the Local Ground Ambulance Provider & Serve as Therapy Dog Handler
American Medical Response (AMR) Maui announced today that it has hired its newest operations manager, Michael Romo. In his new role, Romo will lead all members of the local ground ambulance provider in addition to overseeing all day-to-day operations. Romo is joined by a certified therapy dog, Rampart, a two-year old goldendoodle.
“We are thrilled to welcome Michael and Rampart to AMR Maui,” said Speedy Bailey, Regional Director for AMR. “To have someone as dedicated and experienced as Michael Romo is truly exciting. Having Rampart join our team is a bonus!”
Romo has served for more than 20 years as an operations manager and paramedic for AMR’s San Bernardino County, Calif. operation. He has played a leadership role in emergency medical services and national disaster response deployments throughout his career, including hurricanes, wildfires and oil spills. According to Bailey, “already during his short time in the islands, Romo is developing strong relationships with the Maui community that will serve him well.”
“The opportunity to join AMR Maui and bring Rampart with me, is an honor,” said Romo. “I look forward to working with such a dynamic team to help serve the communities of Maui County as an operations manager and therapy dog handler.”
Rampart has been a part of the AMR team for just two years and completed his therapy dog certification last October. Rampart’s role is to bring comfort and provide emotional support to AMR team members, Maui County first responders and community members.
American Medical Response parent company, Global Medical Response, started the GMR Therapy Dog Program in Amarillo, Texas, in 2016. The team includes more than 33 certified therapy dogs from Florida to the Hawaiian Islands. In 2017, GMR sent therapy dogs to help first responders in Las Vegas after the Route 91 Music Festival mass shooting. In August 2019, GMR sent therapy dogs to help El Paso first responders after a mass shooting, and most recently, they sent dogs to Louisiana following Hurricane Ida.
