GMR Scales Up Emergency Response Across the Southeast Following Hurricane Helene

10.1.2024

As crews shift north to assist impacted states, the Gulf braces for another storm.
Global Medical Response (GMR) continues its extensive emergency medical services deployment in the Southeast as Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee begin recovering from the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene, which made landfall on September 27 as a Category 4 hurricane.

All of GMR’s deployed EMS aircraft have been stationed in Greenville, SC, and hundreds of ambulances have been dispatched to affected areas in the Carolinas and other states where they are actively supporting local communities.

The storm was the strongest on record to hit Florida’s Big Bend region. It dropped torrential rain across the Southeast causing life-threatening flooding and damaging winds.

GMR’s teams, including personnel from American Medical Response (AMR), remain actively engaged, supporting local 911 services, evacuating vulnerable hospital patients, and providing critical aid to communities whose local EMS agencies were incapacitated by the storm.

The response for FEMA, health systems and individual states include:
  • Nearly 2,000 personnel deployed through GMR and its network of providers
  • Over 600 hundred vehicles, including ambulances and paratransit units
  • 12 dedicated air ambulance aircraft for emergency medical transport
Monitoring New Threats in the Gulf
As GMR's crews assist the recovery efforts across the Southeast, attention is also turning to the Gulf of Mexico, where another storm is brewing in the same area where Hurricane Helene formed. This potential new storm is being closely monitored for possible impacts later this week across the Gulf States.
Despite the massive scale of Hurricane Helene’s destruction, operations within the storm’s path are proceeding safely. GMR remains fully committed to ensuring that every mission is completed, providing continuous medical support to those affected by the storm.
